Best Selling Books of All Time : From Novel to Nonfiction
Finding the list of All-Time Best Selling Books is harder than you might think. It is hard to find a definite list of them. It is because of two reasons:
1)
The lack of records, inaccuracy, and unreliable bookkeeping back in the olden days.
2 The unexplainable translations of a book into multiple languages worldwide make it hard to find the original. There are too many books that stand out from the rubble of the past. But, after doing all the grinding, researching, and analyzing, we have found some books that will definitely stand out from the wreckage.
The list of all-time best-selling
books is as follows:
- 1)
Don Quixote
- 2)
A Tale of Two Cities
- 3)
Harry Potter and the
Philosopher’s Stone
- 4)
The DaVinci Code
- 5)
The Lord of the Rings
Don Quixote:
Don Quixote by Miguel De Cervantes is the highest-selling and the most translated book ever and is one of the most popular books of all time, with more than a whopping 500 million copies sold. Some historians even consider it as The First Modern Marvel. It is published in 2 parts, ten years apart in the years 1605 and 1615 respectively. It is considered to be the most influential literature work of all time.
The novel follows the journey of a Spanish man named Don Quixote and his squire, Sancho Panzo, who decides to become a knight, just like the characters in the fiction he read, to prove that chivalry is not dead and aspire to be heroes. The protagonist goes through a lot of (mis)adventures along with his Squire who stays loyal to him even when everybody in his life leaves. It is hard to put it under a single genre. The book has a spectrum of themes such as friendship, love, beliefs, etc. Finally, it gives a simple but the most valuable message, “One must live their life genuinely, passionately, irrespective of what others think”.
A Tale of Two Cities:
A Tale of Two
Cities by Charles Dickens is one of the best-selling books in India
is set in the backdrop of the French Revolution and is about the 18-year-long imprisonment
of a French Doctor, Manette, in the Bastille prison, in Paris; and his eventual
release to live with his daughter, Lucie in London, whom he has never met
before. The story operates in two cities, namely, London and France. The novel
dives into the contrast between the elitist Government people and the oppressed
common people. While it is sympathetic to the oppressed people, it doesn’t
waste a chance to criticize the oppression they are subjected to.
Published in 1859, it has sold a staggering
200 million copies. It is said that the book has inspired Johnathan Nolan’s
screenplay for the movie The Dark Night Rises, and there are several
adaptations of the book in every field of representation possible, Film, Radio,
Stage, and many more. While the story is set in a political background, the
story operates on many themes such as love, sacrifice, hope, and grief.
